Can't add words to dictionary using T9

I'm having trouble adding words to my dictionary using predictive text. Normally, from what I understand, all I have to do is spell out the word in predictive text mode to add that word to the dictionary. I've been trying to add the word "computer", but it always spells out "compuser" for some reason. The word "I.ll" is always spelled out first before "I'll" and I'm also trying to fix that as well. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance =]

My phone is an N95 with the firmware V12.0.013

It's there. Type and you will get compuser as the first option but then press '*', it should change to all possible combinations in the dictionary.

Let me know if this works.

When I pressed the * button, it doesn't change anything. It goes right to the "spell" option on the top left hand corner button. I believe the problem is that adding words to the dictionary is disabled or something?

That is the way to add words - as you did, with the 'word' still underlined on the screen, press * to cycle through the list of possible saved options, once these are exhausted then the 'spell' option will show, select this, then type the word that you want saved into the pop-up box, and select 'OK' to save in the T9 dictionary.

Are you saying that these are not saved after doing this?

If you have 'erroneous' words saved accidentally in T9, then these will always show as well in the cycle. E.g. when I type " IT'S " I always get " IT,S " showing first as I saved it by mistake. Pressing * then shows IT'S as I wanted originally. Unfortunately there is no way to remove false entries in T9. Well unless, you refresh your firmware again. You can use a file manager (that shows hidden files) to delete the t9 user-dictionary, but I don't know of one that currently works on the N95.

Presume as well that you're using the correct writing language for the phone, just a thought. (You can change under settings>general>personalisation).

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. The words are not saved after I did this. Yeah, I made sure I have the correct language selected as well; that being English.

The only thing I can think of is to update the firmware when a newer one comes out and hope it fixes this problem.

Re: Can't add words to dictionary using T9

You could always check the contents of the dictionary file.

To do this you'll need to install something that lets you see system files (Y-Browser's good and free - google it).

Once you're installed go to:

c:\Predic

You'll find a .dat file. This is your dictionary file. Copy it to a directory on your memory card then transfer the copy to a PC. You should then be able to view it in notepad in windows (note it is formatted and some text editors like TextPad won't show it properly .. or rather will show it properly but you don't want it to).

You can amend the file - remove the entries you don't like and add entries you do - however be sure and keep a backup of the original before copying the revised file back to your card then back to the c:\Predic folder.

I tried editing it, but whenever I loaded it up in notepad, it looks encrypted. Same goes for wordpad. I did however got it working after I deleted that file. Thanks a lot.

For some reason, it does NOT want to learn the word "computer". It still says "compuser". Annoying...but I can live with it.

"For some reason, it does NOT want to learn the word 'computer'. It still says 'compuser'."

That's because you're pressing the 7 on the keypad instead of 8 for the letter T ;-)

Re: Can't add words to dictionary using T9

Hello!
I have Nokia E50 and i can't add word's to T9 dictionary too. Problem like described at - /discussions/board/message?board.id=messaging&message.id=765&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
I'm deleted DAT file in C:\Predic and dictionary starts anew. Words saving without problem.
Maybe exist limitation on size of DAT file? If YES how can i remove its or simple increase maximum size of this file?

Re: Can't add words to dictionary using T9

Yeah I had a problem with my 6280 that I couldn't add words except on the very first text or if I added the word as someones name for a birthday. And now with my N95 8gb it seems to be randomly forgetting words, also it doesn't remember captials like the 6280 would, for instance I taught my phone that a string of x's should be displayed xXxXxXxXxXxXxXxX and I went on for age so that I could do as many as I wanted, but now I don't get any such pretty formatting, or with names, like Ritchie.

All I can suggest as an alternative is to create a template with as many as you'll ever need.

Re: Can't add words to dictionary using T9

I am trying to edit my son's name into the dictionary - "Tuyen" and have followed all the advice given so far. If I use the * option whilst the word is underlined, it accepts it; however when I tried to send a new message it is  no longer an option in the dictionary. How do I add it as a word permanently?
